ultrasonic scaling

SPEAKER: Bonnie Miller, RDH, BS is the staff Registered Dental Hygienist at the Ryan Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Power scaling has become the standard of care in routine dental procedures, and, when used with expertise, can be as effective as hand scaling in nonsurgical periodontal therapy. This course will provide the foundations necessary for the veterinary clinician to develop skills to become proficient in the safe and effective use of sonics and ultrasonics.

Participants completing this course will understand the reasoning for use of power scalers, including a review of the periodontal disease process and oral anatomical structures. Differences in scaling equipment will be reviewed, including comparisons of sonic and ultrasonic, piezoelectric and magnetostrictive devices, and available options for tip design. Proper equipment adjustments and instrumentation techniques will be discussed, preceded by instructions for implementing important safety precautions for patients and clinicians.
